Ahead of tomorrow’s expected Samsung Galaxy S3 launch, the Samsung Galaxy S2 has been dethroned as the UK’s highest selling handset following 11 months atop the UK sales chart.
Replaced as the UK’s most popular handset by bitter rival Apple and the iPhone 4S, the Samsung Galaxy S2 slipped to second in terms of UK sales during the past month as consumers hold out for the upcoming Android powerhouse.
Followed by a selection of fellow high-end handsets seven of the remaining eight places of the top ten handsets were filled by Android powered devices as the HTC One X secured third spot ahead of the Samsung Galaxy Note and Samsung Galaxy Ace in fourth and fifth positions.
The figures, compiled by comparison site uSwitch, have shown that interest in the Galaxy S2 has dropped off in anticipation of the handset’s replacement with Apple capitalising in the brief lull in sales of the 4.3-inch powerhouse.
“After ruling the roost for 11 consecutive months, it will be a bitter blow for Samsung that they couldn’t maintain the number one spot for an entire year,” Ernest Doku, technology expert at uSwitch.com, said.
“The Galaxy S II has been a worthy and enduring bestseller, significantly undercutting the iPhone on pay monthly whilst providing a close parity of features, but official word surrounding an imminent sequel has really slowed sales this month.
“If the current buzz is anything to go by, the next Samsung Galaxy phone could really make a strong impact on the May charts, from pre-order interest alone. This is without a doubt the most excited we’ve ever seen consumers over a non-Apple device.”
Rounding out the top ten of April’s most popular handsets, the HTC One S entered the charts in sixth position ahead of the Sony Xperia S, 16GB Apple iPhone 4, and the HTC Wildfire S. The Sony Ericsson Arc S black lined up in the final spot.
